THINKING OF YOUR COMFORT

We have transportation service for patients who visit us from the United States.

What kind of anesthesia is used?

We prefer local anesthesia and sedation in most cases, however there will be cases where general anesthesia is indicated in more complex cases and some cases of secondary rhinopathies.

How long does the surgery take?

The surgery takes approximately 2 hours. There are more complex cases that require more surgery time. Other times it is necessary to correct the nasal function or an associated pathology, which increases the surgical time. The intervention is performed inside the nostrils, so no aesthetic marks remain.

Where are these types of operations performed and how long have I been interned?

Rhinoplasty is performed in a sanatorium operating room. It is not advisable to do it in doctor's offices. It is an outpatient intervention. The total time of hospitalization is usually one hour before and three hours after surgery. The bed is usually reserved for the night in case the patient prefers more comfort staying in the sanatorium. It is required to have completed the surgical consent before performing the surgery. After surgery, the patient receives a post-surgical instruction, which can be seen here.

How much time do I need to return to normal activities?

Activities without effort and inside the house can be done at 48 hs. To resume activities outside the house it is recommended to wait 7 to 10 days. For intense physical activities it is recommended between 3 weeks and a month.

Is the postoperative period of rhinoplasty painful?

Generally not. The postoperative period is not painful. Patients usually show discomfort and a feeling of nasal congestion. If there is pain you can take analgesics like ibuprofen or diclofenac. We also indicate antibiotics the days after the intervention.

What is the minimum and maximum age to perform a rhinoplasty for aesthetic and / or functional purposes?

Rhinoplasty for cosmetic purposes is recommended after 90% of the growth of the nose has been completed. This occurs after the pubertal "spurt". In girls, it is usually possible to perform the intervention after 13 or 14 years and in men after 15, a criterion shared with the Mexican Association of Plastic Surgery. This rule is not absolute, there are cases of rhinoplasty in younger children if there is a medical indication or associated health problems. It must be borne in mind that minors want the consent of both parents to carry out the surgical intervention. We must also take into account the psychological maturity of the patient to go through a surgical process that modifies their image.

What are the pre-surgical studies that should be done?

  • Laboratory study (blood test): Complete blood count, blood chemistry, coagulation times (TPyTTP).
  • Electrocardiogram with evaluation of surgical risk, in case your doctor requests it.
  • X-ray of the face in 3 projections.

If I do not live in Reynosa, how many days will I have to stay in the city?

It is convenient to pre-schedule the date of the intervention. Arrive in Reynosa, conduct the interview in person with the specialist and perform the surgical procedure as soon as the results are obtained. A stay of between 10 and 15 days is scheduled in Reynosa. See our instructions for more information on how to organize the trip and operation in Reynosa, with Dr. Campos.

Since when can I wear glasses?

The first 10 days after the operation can be used reading glasses and dark glasses because they are supported to the plaster. After removing the cast, it is advisable not to wear glasses for approximately 4 to 6 weeks. As for contact lenses, they can be used after three hours of surgery without inconvenience. In some cases, if ultra-light glasses are used, they can rest on a tape placed on the nasal dorsum after removing the splint, without complications.

How long should I wait to sunbathe?

The first 15 days are critical in that, in the presence of visible hematomas, sunbathing would leave a mark of color on the skin (like a tattoo). The use of sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) is recommended even in short exposures. To be able to sunbathe directly it is advisable to wait between 30 and 45 days.

What type of technique is used (open rhinoplasty vs closed rhinoplasty)?

Basically there are 2 types of techniques to perform surgery. The first is called "closed technique". The incisions are made inside the nostrils so that they are absolutely invisible. In contrast, the "open technique" requires a small incision in the columella (column that separates the nostrils below). The choice of technique will depend on the problem that needs to be solved. To correct the problems related to a dorsal hump, the "closed technique" is usually enough. In contrast, when the most important change should be made in the region of the nasal tip, it is usually resorted to "open rhinoplasty". The final choice of technique is made by the surgeon. The open technique leaves a scar almost invisible in the columella that, if the patient looks for it with a mirror from below, he will be able to observe it but the rest of the people will not notice it. We choose the open way in the vast majority of cases, because we understand that we have more capacity to reproduce the result we want using this approach.

From what moment can I appreciate the result of the surgery?

As soon as the plaster is removed, the changes made can be appreciated. Keep in mind that initially the nose swells and distorts the result. At 2 months after surgery you can see approximately 70% of the result. The rest of the edema that persists is only noticed by the surgeon and the patient, but not by the rest of the people. It is considered that the nose continues to deflate during a postoperative year, so that still, although minimally, changes will occur.

Can there be complications?

As with any surgical procedure, there is always an associated risk of complications. In the case of a healthy patient undergoing controlled and scheduled general anesthesia, this risk is minimal. With regard to surgical intervention, the complications that can appear are, fortunately, rare: hemorrhages that require some type of medical action such as nasal tamponade or reoperation, scar alteration and infection, among others. As for the result, statistics in the world report between 10 and 20 percent of the need for new intervention to correct defects not solved in previous surgery or that have appeared a posteriori.

Where can I see examples of Rhinoplasty?

In this link you can see several cases of rhinoplasty with photographs before and after the intervention in different planes. You can see a basic classification of nose types and their practical resolution with technical data.
